Role of calcium (II) in anaerobic sludge granulation and UASB reactor operation: A method to develop calcium-fortified sludge outside the UASB reactors

چکیده
Calcium is essential to the growth of several strains of microorganisms involved in anaerobic digestion. It has also been found to be effective in speeding up granulation of anaerobic sludges. But there are reports that the metal can exert a harmful effect on the performance of upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor by causing the ‘cementing’ of some of the active sludge in the reactor, leading to loss of mobility and/or microbial activity of the sludge. In the present work, calcium-assisted granule formation was done outside the UASB reactor to foreclose this possibility. The granules were then used to run UASB reactors without any further fortification of the feed with Ca. The work has led to an option whereby granular seed sludge of good settling characteristics can be generated outside UASB reactor through Ca fortification without any possibility of endangering the UASB reactor performance. This route also helps in much quicker UASB start-up.

Dynamic Modeling of Granular Sludge in UASB Reactors
n this paper, a mathematical model has been derived to predict the granulation time of anaerobic sludge in UASB reactors. In the proposed model, some physical, chemical and biological parameters affecting the granulation phenomena have been considered. To validate the model, 12 pilot-scale experiments in 4 UASB reactors are carried out and the results are discussed here. The reactors are starte...

Six upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors were concurrently operated for 146 d to examine the effects of calcium on the sludge granulation process during start-up. Introduction of Ca at concentrations from 150 to 300mg/l enhanced the biomass accumulation and granulation process. The calcium concentration in the granules was nearly proportional to the calcium concentration in the feed,...
متن کاملThe Effect of Sulfate Concentration on COD Removal and Sludge Granulation in UASB Reactors
Four identical 37.5 Liter UASB reactors R1, R2, R3 and R4 were used to study the effect of sulfate concentration on granule formation. Diluted molasses with COD range 1000–1300 mg/l were used as feed and acclimated cow manure was used as seed. Concentration of sulfate ions in the four reactors were 100, 500, 1000 and 1500mg/l. Granules were observed in R2 after 33 days from startup time, while ...

This paper presents the results of an investigation into the treatment of Tehran Refinery effluents in UASB reactors. Four pilot-scale UASB reactors were built with similar dimensions, each with a volume of 45.78 1, and operated in parallel at 37 °C. The sludge seed was prepared from the waste activated sludge of the wastewater treatment unit of the refinery. The organic loading rates were grad...
متن کامل1 Comparisons Between the UASB and the EGSB Reactor
Some characteristics of Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB), Expended Granule Sludge Blanket (EGSB), and Static Granular Bed Reactor (SGBR) were investigated in order to compare performances of the three and recognize advantages and disadvantages, respectively. The UASB reactor is developed in the late 1970s and became rapidly widespread due to great performances. With granules, this reactor...
